Bill Walsh, 1931-2007

Legendary coach Bill Walsh died on Monday at the age of 75 after a long battle with leukemia.

Walsh, who was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993, guided the San Francisco 49ers to three Super Bowl titles in 10 years.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of Bill’s death,” commented Hall of Fame President/Executive Director Steve Perry.  “Clearly, Bill left an indelible mark on the game of pro football.  Long before he accomplished the great feat of turning San Francisco into a three-time Super Bowl champion, his offensive expertise helped change the game.”

Walsh developed the “West Coast” offense that quickly turned the 49ers from basement dwellers to Super Bowl winners.  In 10 seasons as San Francisco’s head coach, Walsh compiled a 102-63-1 record, led the team to six NFC Western Division titles, and victories in Super Bowls XVI, XIX, and XXIII.
